Banned Books week - 9/26/09 - 10/03/09

It's time again to celebrate - would that be the right word, when speaking of censorship? - rather, let us say recognize Banned Books Week. The library will display a number of books which have been challenged or banned outright from schools and libraries, along with the reasons they have been so controversial.. Would you believe than many people have even tried to ban the Bible? Watch this little video for a humorous look at Banned Books Week, and come on down to the library to see which of these many items you would like to read!

DO SOMETHING DANGEROUS - READ A BANNED BOOK!

Chad, Rustle, and Mooch, the Crash Pad puppets, misinterpret the meaning of Banned Books Week, trying to throw some books with objectionable content--including Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, The Joy of Cooking, and the phone book--out of the library, until Herb points out the error of their ways.

Another short video of interest: Why NOT to ban books

Author Stephen Chbosky shares a letter he received from a reader of his young adult novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Alternately funny and moving, it demonstrates the effect that a book can have on a life--even (and especially) a book that some would have removed from library shelves. Filmed at ALA's Banned Books Read-Out in Chicago September 27, 2008. Transcript (opens in new window or tab).

I have a book that I bought from Barnes and Noble that was about banned books. It featured alluring snippets of these banned books, reeling you into and daring you to read them. Once I find that book I will be sure to post it incase anyone's interested in reading and purchasing it also.
